Big Schedule for Fall Launch

I remember at the last station I worked when I first started in Master Control, (the hub of the station that made sure viewers saw shows on the air and not static snow), we aired old re-runs of a classic television show popular from 1968 to 1980. Getting up in the early morning hours on the weekend wasn’t my favorite thing to do, but airing this show gave me a reason to get going for the day. After turning the transmitter on for the broadcast day, I couldn’t wait until the opening theme song came on so I could crank up the speakers in the room and “rock out and ride the waves” to it. That theme song I heard many years ago is now back again and can be found on KPSP Local 2 Monday nights at 10pm beginning September 20^th. The show …Hawaii Five-0.

Alex O’Loughlin plays the classic role of Steve McGarrett. You probably remember him from other CBS shows such as Moonlight and Three Rivers. Scott Caan plays the role of Danno and for all you “Lost” fans, Chin Ho Kelly returns to television as Daniel Dae Kim. It should be interesting if this remake can come close to the original.

Other new shows to look out for this Fall on KPSP Local 2 are The Defenders starring Jim Belushi and Jerry O’Connell as colorful Las Vegas defense attorneys airing Wednesday nights at 10pm. The new drama from Emmy Award Winning writers of The Sopranos, Blue Bloods, starring Tom Selleck and Donnie Wahlberg airs Friday nights at 10pm. And if you’re into comedy, from the creator of Two and a Half Men, it’s Mike and Molly airing Monday nights at 9:30pm and on Thursday nights at 8:30pm its William Shatner starring in $#! My Dad Says, the show inspired by Twitter.

Of course, you’ll still be able to watch your favorite shows returning for another season such as How I Met Your Mother, Rules of Engagement, Two and a Half Men, NCIS, NCIS Los Angeles, Criminal Minds, The Big Bang Theory, CSI, The Mentalist, Medium, CSI:NY, 48 Hours Mystery, 60 Minutes, The Amazing Race, Undercover Boss, The Good Wife and CSI: Miami.

Yes, Fall is upon us with so many premieres on other networks. New shows to speck out, new episodes to watch. I always enjoy this time of year as I’m sure most everyone else does too…no more re-runs! My bet for winners this new season would have to be The Defenders. I think the chemistry of its two main stars will make it a hit. Plus, writers can come up with many story lines when the show is based in Las Vegas!

The "C" Word

We’ve all been affected by it…Cancer. We may know someone who has/had it…we may have a family member who has a form of it…you may even have it. Several years ago, the mother of one of my closest friends had it. At that time, I didn’t know how to react when my friend told me. I didn’t know how I could help. I didn’t know what she or her mother were going through. I didn’t know the pain of her loss when her mother passed away from it. I nearly lost that friendship because of my disconnect with her and the disease. I didn’t understand it, nor did I know how to deal with it…then.

Now, that “C” word haunts me today, even three years after I lost my Father to Melanoma Cancer. Everyone goes through their own emotions and deals with them differently, but I understand now what it was like for my friend, seeing her mother deal with the disease and eventually succumb to it. For my Dad, it took only two months from his diagnosis to the day he passed away. He was and still remains my Hero. He fought it to the very end and continued to have the strength to keep going. That strength he had is what keeps me going today. Motivated to make a difference in this world where I can. After learning more about skin cancer and Melanoma, I thought about that difference I could make, bringing more awareness to the valley about this type of cancer. My mission is to help educate people so they don’t have to experience the nastiness of this disease. That’s why I’m taking part once again in this year’s Relay for Life. This October my team, Prescott Power, will walk in memory of my Dad and all the others we know and love who have or have had some form of cancer. Cancer is ugly, no matter what type it is and we have the “power” to make a difference and bring more awareness to the community. Besides Prescott Power,you’ll also see me walking with the KPSP Local 2 team. Our station is standing up to cancer and with other teams across the valley, we come together to walk for a cure. That cure for cancer may not be found in my lifetime, but my mission is to get the word out…to bring more awareness about skin cancer and melanoma and what can be done to prevent it.
With my Dad’s strength … I’ll do my best to make that happen.

A Priceless Gift For Father's Day

You’ve probably seen them on television and have heard them on the radio…all the promotions and ads for Father’s Day and the great gifts you can get your Dad on his special day. How about buying him a grill...a watch…or power tools? The ads are everywhere. Most Dads don’t even ask much for Father’s Day. I know mine didn’t, which at times was frustrating for me as I wanted to give him something special to show him how much I appreciated him. “You don’t need to get me anything, save your money”, he would say to me. Even today I can still hear those words he would say to me even though he’s been gone three years…

I was very fortunate and blessed to have the bond my Father and I shared. Not only was he my Dad, he was also my friend. Not many children have that opportunity to experience that type of relationship with a parent. His support (along with my Mom’s) got me where I am today. He was the one who suggested I get into the television business and here I am, still in it twenty years later. I’m dating myself, but just like the old television show said, “Father Knows Best”…

Maybe you don’t know what to get your Dad for Father’s Day. Maybe you don’t have the budget to buy him that “perfect” gift to show how much you care. I want you to know that you don’t need to worry. There is something you can give him this year that won’t cost you a cent, but is priceless. On this Father’s Day, tell your Dad you love him. I know I will.

Wake Up Call

Every weekday morning from 5am to 7am you can see the smiling faces of Todd Piro and Stella Inger on KPSP Local 2 This Morning in studio or on the set. Unfortunately what you won’t be able to see are the many outtakes our Promotion Department recently experienced while video shooting our newest image campaign featuring the morning duo. If you were wondering, their chemistry on camera is just as genuine off camera. I had the opportunity to sit in on some of the video shooting and even though they had been up since 2am that morning, ten hours later, they were still having fun and it showed on tape. Their attitudes in what we asked them to do were refreshing and their joyful behavior made the afternoon enjoyable. While Todd plays the “fall guy” and Stella is the “serious” one, their respect for one another shows on and off the camera. It’s refreshing to see that type of working relationship where each one enjoys working with the other and what they do. You may have seen the first round of promos on our air already. If you haven’t, check them on our Facebook, Twitter and YouTube pages. Each week throughout the sweeps period, a new promo will air to reveal what makes Todd and Stella the reason to watch KPSP Local 2 in the morning. We went outside the box a little for this campaign as it’s different from any of the others we’ve done here at KPSP Local 2. Focusing On You, The Customer

Recently KPSP Local 2 asked you, our viewers, to call in to our phone bank to tell us what stories you would like for us to cover and I want to thank all who called in to share their story ideas with us. Don’t worry if you didn’t get through, as we will have more opportunities in the future for you to call in! I did have the pleasure to answer some of your calls and the stories you told me about were very insightful. You had questions, comments and suggestions and that is what we want to hear. I found it very beneficial to know what was on our viewer’s minds. So many times when you are part of an organization, you sometimes succumb to your surroundings, forgetting about the customer. You get comfortable and complacent with the daily schedule and procedures of your job and work environment. The focus seems to get lost on what’s best for the customer. Sometimes it takes someone on the “outside”, someone unattached, to give a different perspective to what that focus should be. That’s what KPSP Local 2’s “Join the Conversation” campaign is all about, asking you and your neighbors here in the Coachella Valley how we’re doing and what we can do better to keep you as a satisfied customer. Our on-going commitment is to involve you, our viewer, with what we do. We want to know what’s on your mind, what bugs you, what matters most to you and your family. Our focus is on you. Station Promotion for KPSP Local 2

My name is Cricket Prescott and I’m the Promotion Manager here at KPSP Local 2. I’d like to welcome you to my first blog entry for the Promotions Pipeline. Here is where you can find out what projects we’re working on to promote the station and learn about the events and programs we are affiliated with here in the Coachella Valley. The Promotion Department consists of some very creative individuals who constantly look for new ways to promote the station and how that promotion is distributed for you to see at home. You may see our promotions in the newspaper, on cable, or on the web or hear them on your favorite radio station. Whatever medium it is, our main focus is to promote our news product to you in a way that alerts you to significant stories that will be relevant to you and your family’s life. While promoting all facets of our news product, we also focus on bringing awareness to the special aspects of our web channel, www.kpsplocal2.com, that are fun or interesting or can even save you money such as Coachella Valley Spotlight, Desert Real Deals, Crash the Big Game, and Pro Football Challenge, just to name a few. We know that there are many choices you can make to get your local news and programming and our goal is to help you plan your viewing choices through our station promotion.
